What Is Glaucoma?

The silent thief of sight — and why a pressure check matters.
Glaucoma is damage to the optic nerve, usually linked to raised pressure inside the eye. It is called the silent thief of sight because it takes peripheral vision first, without pain, and most people notice nothing until damage is advanced.\n\nRisk rises with age, a family history of glaucoma, diabetes, and high eye pressure. Vision already lost cannot be recovered, but treatment with drops, laser or surgery can stop it progressing.\n\nThat is why we recommend an eye pressure check for every adult over 35, and yearly screening if glaucoma runs in your family.
